On Sunday 06th November, we held the 2016 NAMIR Ltd Annual General Meeting at Studio 7 Music Repairs, Bristol.

Following the AGM we had a talk on hand tools by Richard Smith of Studio 7 Music Repairs.

After lunch all members present were able to visit Richard's excellent workshop facilities.

SPRING MEETING - 2016

Moulsford Pavilion, Oxfordshire


The Spring Meeting was held on the 22nd of May.

The NAMIR Spring Meeting was made up of two sessions.

In the morning NAMIR members were able to purchase parts available for sale as well as discussing various repair techniques.

During the afternoon Harjit Shah of London based company JAS Musicals gave an excellent talk on the way he has used science and engineering technology to vastly improve the quality of the traditional Indian instruments which he manufactures in his factories in India and then exports all over the world.

The Autumn Meeting was held at the workshop of Cambridge Woodwind Makers and comprised a masterclass on woodwind key design and its relevance to wear given by Daniel Bangham.

The Spring Meeting was held on the 07th of June.

The NAMIR Spring Meeting was made up of two sessions.

In the morning there was an auction of tools, parts and materials belonging to a retiring member.

During the afternoon there was a presentation given by Stephen Hetherington from the One Handed Musical Instrument Trust about the work of the trust and the competition to design instruments for one handed players.

The weekend of NAMIR's 21st Birthday celebrations was started on the evening of Saturday 15th November with a concert organised by Peter Pollard in Manchester.

On Sunday 16th November, we held the 2014 NAMIR Ltd Annual General Meeting in Manchester.

After lunch we were invited to visit the workshop of Peter Pollard's.

Howarth Oboes and Ackerman Music, Worthing and Hove


The Autumn meeting took place at the premises of Howarth Oboes in Worthing and Ackerman Music in Hove.

Members visited the world renown oboe makers Howarth at their factory in Worthing where they received an excellent tour of the works by Company Director Jeremy Walsworth and craftsman Mike Dadson.

After lunch Ackerman Music of Hove were our hosts where we met Brian Ackerman and repair technician, Jim.

Newark College, Newark


The Woodwind Clinic was held on the 13th of July 2014 at Newark College.

Twenty members of NAMIR were treated to an excellent demonstration of tenon replacement and barrel shortening given by Andy Wheeldon who has been teaching woodwind making and repair at Newark College for 22 years. The college also offers courses in Piano, violin and guitar construction and repair..

The Autumn meeting took place at the premises of John Hornby Skewes in Garforth near Leeds.

The highlight of the visit was a talk by Peter Pollard on brass and woodwind.

After lunch there was a tour of the John Hornby Skewes repair shop where various instruments are repaired including brass and woodwind.

Christopher Dean, one of the country's leading guitar makers, gave an excellent presentation during the morning session.

The NAMIR Ltd Annual General Meeting was held on the 18th of November 2012 at R.A.F. Cosford.

The committee and members were guests of the R.A.F. Volunteer Band.

After the business was completed an excellent lunch was provided in the canteen followed by an afternoon session at which Gale Lawson demonstrated the use of the Magnetic Dent Ball System.

Fossati Oboes - 2012

Montargis


Members visited the workshops of Fossati in Montargis, about 75km south of Paris, during the week 16th-20th April 2012. Report and photos to appear soon.

Moulsford Pavilion, Oxfordshire


Moulsford Pavilion, OxfordshireOn the 29th of April Daniel Parker of the Colorado Institute of Musical Instrument Technology gave members four hours of intense tuition on woodwind pad and brass valve work. Taking place in Moulsford with over 50 members present this was one of our best attended meetings to date and was very much enjoyed by all.

Daniel Parker is the Principle Instructor and founder of The Colorado Institute of Musical Instrument Technology. He has presented clinics at NAPBIRT conventions, Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), North Carolina Music Educators Association (NCMEA), and the Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians association (PROBIRT).

The Autumn Meeting took place on Sunday the 18th of September at the new Moulsford Pavillion. Gale opened the meeting with some words about the late David Hinton who is sadly missed. There followed a presentation by Martyn Bailey, a NAMIR member and specialist restorer about Double Bass making and repairing.

After lunch Roger Price, another NAMIR member spoke about his approach to repairing and servicing vintage saxophones.

Spring Meeting - 2011

Rath Trombones and Hanson Clarinets, Huddersfield


The NAMIR Spring Meeting was held near Huddersfield in Yorkshire, followed by Buxton in Derbyshire.

On the morning of Saturday the 21st of May, we toured the factory of Michael Rath, maker of the world famous professional trombones.

After a short drive and lunch we visited the workshop of Alastair Hanson, maker of Hanson clarinets.

The following day we met at the house of Jim Langley, a NAMIR member, who showed us his fine collection of antique brass instruments and allowed players the opportunity of hearing them.

Autumn Meeting - 2010

A great day was enjoyed by members during their visit to the Denis Wick factory, where they saw mouthpieces being made, polished and later plated in the works of Poole Technical Plating Ltd. They also witnessed mutes being hand spun and assembled.

NAMIR AGM - 2009

Trevor Head's Malden School, Llangunllo


The 2009 NAMIR AGM was held on 15th November at Trevor Head's Malden School of Musical Instrument Repair in Wales.

The AGM was held in the morning, followed by a lunch supplied by some local caterers.

In the afternoon Trevor demonstrated some techniques for removing stuck slides on brass instruments, and showed us how to re-plate a trumpet.
